In Affliction, Stand On Promises

“Truth I’m Standing On”

By Leanna Crawford

All the pain had a purpose

Your plan was perfect all along

(Written towards the end of COVID-19)

This song starts out quiet, talking about fear and doubt. By the first time through singing the chorus, though, it changes, becoming stronger and more declarative. A lot of times, that is how it works in our own life. The fear may be overtaking us, but as we start decreeing and remembering the promises, it get easier and louder, as those truths become the things we stand on.

The Bible is jam packed with truths.

In a time when I had been struggling to stand, I found that a sJesus helps me up he whispers  promises and truths. Promises from God can be trusted. The Bible says:

“For no word form God will ever fail.”— Luke 1:37

Which means God’s promises can be trusted. They can be a firm foundation because they are spoken by God.

In the song “The Truth I’m Standing On”, it addresses three key promises. These three promises are truly promises to stand on during hard times. The Bible says that promises preserve you in times of suffering (See Psalm 119:50). When you feel out of strength, these are promises you can stand on.

1. God is faithful

“God is not a human, That he should lie,

not a human being, that he should

change his mind.

Does he speak and then not act?

Does he promise and not fulfill?” — Numbers 23:19

In my Bible next to this verse, I scribbled “NO! He is so faithful!” Now, right before I found that verse, I had seriously been questioning God’s faithfulness. But right in the midst of that pain, I read this verse, and my trust in God’s faithfulness was renewed with one verse.

Faithfulness means according to Google

  • loyal, constant, and steadfast.

Doesn’t that just describe all of God? He is all of those things! We can trust and stand on his faithfulness because it is so unwavering. God is going to be faithful in all areas of your life, the ups and downs, and the ugly or the beautiful. He is faithful through everything.

2. God is holding us

“God is our refuge and strength

an ever-present help in trouble.” — Psalm 46:1

In time of distress frustration or trouble God is still there with us. It can be so easy to feel like we have been forgotten and abandoned. But as you lean into God, you will feel his arms. The times I feel God’s arms the strongest are when I feel let down and when I am in pain.

God does not let us go when we are in a season of pain. In fact I strongly agree with this verse:

“It was good for me to be afflicted

so that I might learn your decrees.” — Psalm 119:71

In times of suffering, when all I had left to stand on were God’s promises, I have learned so much more about God. This quote describes perfectly why troubles actually strengthen us.

“Actually, we’ve found that nightmares give your prayer life a real boost— and teach you a whole lot at warp speed.” — Do Hard Things by Alex and Brett Harris, page 128

So stand on the truth that God is holding you. And as you lean into him, he will not only hold you, but teach you. Through this affliction he will teach you how to trust him more, and give you opportunities to grow and learn. God is the only person who can truly understand all your pain and you get to be taught by him, so in this time of suffering, press into our Savior, and learn all He has for you.

3. God’s plan is perfect

I choose these two lyrics “All the pain had a purpose Your plan was perfect all along”, because they are truly why we can stand. Because God has a perfect plan, I have peace. I am not afraid though 10,000 may fall at my right hand, and thousand at my side (See Psalm 91:7). This verse says:

“The Lord works out everything to its

proper end—

Even the wicked for a day of disaster.” — Proverbs 16:4

If God is working everything, including evil, to its appropriate ending, he will work out your own life to its perfect ending.

Will you stand on these promises?

As I close this out. I have a question for you. Will you stand on these promises? Choosing to believe them is a choice you have to make for yourself. When you are feeling down, truths have the tendency to slam into you. But you still have the choice to look at those truths and believe them even when doing so might seem off. That is when faith jumps in.

“Now faith is the confidence in what we hope for and the assurance about what we do not see.” — Hebrews 11:1

Do you choose to believe God is faithful? Will you crawl into his lap and lean on him through your suffering? Do you have faith that God’s plan is always perfect?
