3 Places We Can’t Afford to Go Speechless

All I know is I won't go speechless, speechless
No, I won't live unspoken

“Moses said to the Lord, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.”
The Lord said to him, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf and mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” — Exodus 4:10-12

Moses is maybe one of the most well known men in the Bible. He took God’s people out of the slavery of Egypt and lead them as they lived in the desert for 40 years. He was a man very close to God. Later in Exodus we see Him spending 40 days in God’s presence receiving laws that would guide the people for ages. But one of Moses’s first worries was that He could not speak eloquently (eloquent means persuasive in speaking or writing).

God’s response is almost comical. You can imagine Him up in heaven shaking His head saying.

“Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf and mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” — Exodus 4:11-12

We may laugh at Moses for His seeming silliness. But how often do we go speechless? We don’t know what to say or how to say it well, so we stay silent. However, the Bible tells us to:

“Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous deeds among the people.” — 1 Chronicles 16:24

We are told to declare! That is a strong word for speak. But how often do we declare God’s glory to the world? Most of us hang our heads because we just don’t declare His works weekly least of all daily. We have given in to fear. Satan makes us steal our own voice by giving in to fear. We have conformed the patterns of this world which is one of the things the Bible tells us not to do (see Romans 12:2a).

We live in a culture where speaking your mind can be frowned upon. We live in a place of easy offense taken by people. One word can make people upset. It is so much easier to stay silent. It cuts back on fear if we do. Fear clutters our mind though. We no longer have a sound mind. The Bible warns against that saying.

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” — 1 Peter 5:8

Don’t let fear fill your mind so our enemy, who is like a lion, can devour you. If you have Jesus in you though, the Bible says:

“For the spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self discipline.” —2 Timothy 1:7

With God we have a mind that is not scared. God gives us power to speak, words to say, and the Holy Spirit to guide us. We have all the tools we need to declare His wonders among the nations. But there are a lot of nations in our world. Where do we start?

3 places we can’t afford to go Speechless
1. Communities, Churches, Families

These our the people we touch every week. So many people in our communities are looking for light. Do not let fear hold you back from sharing a Bible verse with your neighbor. Our churches also have hurting people in them. Church is a good place to break through He fear of speaking what God tells you because most people around you believe similar things. Families are another powerful place to speak up. I know families aren’t perfect. Most people feel comfortable with their families though because they spend a lot of time with them. With our families we get a very deep relationship, so it makes it easier to talk about how God has changed your life. We can be the change in people’s lives when we chose to speak. These people are most infused by our word because they get the privilege of seeing us and talking face to face. We can speak to them with more them just our words also with our actions.

“But set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.” — 1 Timothy 4:12b  (Bold added)

2. Online

You have millions of people at your fingertips daily! The internet had made it so easy for people around the world to hear God’s word and witness stories of strong Christians. The internet gives us one of the most influential places to declare God’s glory. We don’t need to hide for fear of loosing followers or being hurt because of what others think about Him. Remember, God matters more and people that pull away generally needed to hear what you said. We can’t just be quiet Christians that post only when we go to church. If Jesus is a part of your life, He  needs to be a part of your social media profile. I think the most powerful thing we can post about is how God is working in our lives but more importantly, Bible verses. The Bible says:

“For the word of God is alive and active. Shaper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges that thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” — Hebrews 4:12

The internet reaches across the world and the Bible contains the strongest words we can share. Don’t go speechless online. The world is too reliant on the internet for us to go quiet about who God is and why we need him.

3. Prayer

The last place we can’t afford to go speechless is prayer. If we go speechless here we are guaranteed to go speechless in all other areas of life. Because the Bible says:

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” — 1 Peter 5:8

If we don’t talk to God, how do we expect to grow closer to him, become more holy, and shine  brightly for him? When you don’t pray, your mind becomes less alert to God’s voice and our enemy waits for that so He  can devour us. Do not go silent in prayer. The Bible tells us:

“Pray continually” — 1 Thessalonians 5:17

We need to talk to God continually. Have you ever had a best friend you did not talk to weekly at least? Most people don’t let conversation stay quiet for long, because if there is silence you just don’t grow closer to people. You must set aside time to pray, or you will be devoured by the devil causing you to go speechless in your communities, families, churches, and online. God can’t teach us how to speak if we don’t talk to Him first.

God gave us our mouths. He helps us to speak and teaches us what to say (see Exodus 4:11-12). Satan tries to make us fear, He  tries to steal our words, and He  tries to shush us. The Bible warns us about that, but it tells us that Jesus came to give us life and a voice (See John 10:10). We have the Bible that is active and alive, and we have God who gives us power, love, and self discipline.

Go forward, don’t let your voice get stolen. The Bible instructs us to declare His glory, and God gives us the tools of our month and His word to spread the word, and love Him more and more though it all. Our world needs us to speak, and you will not be alone as you do for the Lord goes with you and He will give you the words to say. Go declare His glory among the nations.
